Japan to grant patent after 17-day screening; the world’s fastest

Japan will grant a patent right on a process of detecting toxic metals in water to Keio University after only 17 days of screening procedures, the time spent on the examination was the world’s shortest, government officials said Friday.

As early as next week, the university will obtain a patent right after it pays the necessary fees, the officials said, adding that the period of screening this time compares with an average of two months in Japan under the current ‘‘accelerated examination system’’ and about two years under normal circumstances. In order not to lose a source of international competitiveness in the future, Japan has been accelerating efforts to support the development of innovative technologies and protection of their patent rights in recent years.
