On Filipino cosplaying and how ugly it is now

Posted in life, Random, Special posts by Fated Blue on January 29, 2011

I miss the days when knowledge of cosplay or cosplay events in the country was limited to a select few. Yeah, I’m feeling a bit selfish but only because having it appear mainstream has so far, in my opinion, degraded cosplaying as a hobby and promoted it as a stepping stone to media popularity. Not to mention the fact that it somehow promotes the rampant perversion of the hobby. I also disapprove the fact that women (minor or adult) readily pose provocatively just so a pervert with a DSLR (who thinks he’s a photographer) can do “opportunistic” shots of that certain scantily clad female cosplayer. And the worst part of it all is that the “victim” doesn’t mind it at all; as if completely unaware.

I don’t know what will happen to the “wonderful world of cosplaying” here in the Philippines. I’m sure it’ll exist but I don’t think it’ll be better than what we HAD before; like 5 years ago. It’ll be of less quality and more on quantity at the very least. You will hate me for the following but I kind of realize how GT was right all along. I’ll even go as far as sympathize with him/them. I guess, to be fair, GT and his buddies were mostly WRONG when they were just starting. But in the last 2 years? Their past blogs would’ve had more fans now than haters compared to when they were posted back in the days where multiply was the warzone of every “popular” blogger.

The drama that goes on behind the stage is just too dumb for me to even consider them as serious arguments. Most onlookers don’t even have any idea how crazy these guys get when it comes to their favorite hobby (or, don’t laugh, “profession”). It’s like they’ll die if one person, among hundreds or thousands, would say some random nasty stuff about them. It’s like they don’t mind having to read every single good comment but they cannot, for the life of them, accept one ugly comment which was possibly written by a jealous fan or better yet, a fellow cosplayer. And the plot thickens! The battlefield is usually the internet and people get entangled in a web of fiery blogs. You don’t even want to know about the days when Alodia wasn’t on TV yet and when GT was just starting. These people can’t get over the fact that they can’t please one guy/girl out of a million fans (which are mostly pedophiles). This applies to every goddamn cosplayer out there who keeps on posting pictures for everyone to see and comment on. And for the record, Alodia was even good at keeping her cool despite insults to her family and the occasional death threats.

The fights only happen within the safety of the internet, though. So-called “brave” knights would ask people for a fight in the real world, even to go as far as attempt to do a stake-out. Yet nothing really happens. The cosplayers they’re “protecting” think it’s so cool and brave of them to do those things. What they don’t realize is that they do those things because the technology that enables you to actually punch a guy’s face on the internet has yet to be invented. I even see this as being a dumbass or a total idiot. I mean, why even get angry over some little comment when you have the whole world as support? To be fair, I’ll even go as far as say that I once was so naive as to act like a white knight when it came to “defending the innocent” on the internet. I didn’t hurt nor did I do the bad comments to anyone, though. I would’ve written some but I loved cosplaying so much I’d keep my comments to myself.

Oh wait. I remember one instance wherein a “hater” was physically “apprehended” by “the law”. It was GT being asked to leave a convention c/o Mr. Ronald Guanzon.

I used to be one of those avid fans you see falling in line an hour before the actual doors to the convention hall was opened. I used to book convention dates a month before they actually happen. I used to blog (and review) about conventions minutes after arriving home. I used to bring my trusty digicam with me and just be trigger-happy all throughout the day. I used to not mind the fact that I get dizzy or I sometimes get sick with fever since I enjoy the conventions. I used to not mind my feet killing me by standing and walking around for hours on end. I used to buy random souvenirs no matter how expensive or abusively overpriced the item was. I used to feel the thrill of immersing one’s self in a room full of very colorful people with very colorful traits and actions. I used to drown myself in a sea of what society would label as freaks or weirdos. Now I don’t even dare go inside.

It was fun the first 5 or 10 times but it got old not just because of the same things you see inside these so-called conventions (that I’d rather just call a “massive gathering” because conventions are more organized) but also because of the fact that you can see the same thing done every other time; the only difference being the people who do (and mostly ruin) the cosplay. It’s not just a case of low quality cosplaying but more on recent “cosplayers” disrespecting the said hobby by not doing it well enough; and I even have very low standards since I don’t even cosplay in the first place. Not to mention the fact that I soon realized how dumb I was for even buying overpriced items I can easily buy at half the price in some other hobby shop.

And talk about promoting piracy. Cosplayers who often adore the creators of their anime or manga can’t even have the heart to buy original. Torrent is one thing (since it’s free) but to actually sell stolen merchandise? I think I see a crime here. They say they want to have their own copies even though they can’t buy original. I say there is internet and fast download speeds. I don’t think it’s okay to label cosplayers in the Philippines to accept piracy as a way of trade. It just further diminishes the hobby to a whole new level.

With all that was written, I can no longer bring myself to a cosplay convention alone. It’s either I have a purpose to be there (like to be with friends) or I got kidnapped, stashed inside a barrel, and stored inside a convention hall the night before the event happens. It’s no longer fun anymore. The only “fun” thing that remains is how cosplayers humiliate themselves to entertain audiences (or mostly pervs with DSLRs) and it’s not even that funny anymore. I mean, they (cosplayers) are people too. I think they shouldn’t forget that fact. They’re not mostly there to be the laughing stock of the crowd nor are they there to make otherwise erectile dysfunctional men achieve a quick boner. They forget that they are there to play the role of the character they are attempting to, well, play. I wish they would at least reserve an ounce of respect for themselves before they get on their knees and do a pin-up pose.

I have respect for Filipino cosplayers. I love the fact that they try to introduce the wonderful world of cosplaying to the people of our beloved yet poor country. I admire the fact that they have the patience, time, and money to actually do what they do every month or so. It’s just that I believe in the saying “If it’s worth doing, then it’s worth overdoing”. It’s not like I lost hope but it’s just that I’m disappointed on how the current generation of cosplayers, though more in number, can’t somehow follow in the footsteps of their pioneers.

And this ends my rant.

While I do admit that I do share some of your sentiments with the current condition of Philippine cosplay, however, I can’t help but be so general of how you judge cosplayers now. It’s not even because you’re not a cosplayer. Nor it is not because you participate in photoshoots (as photographer/helper/cosplayer). It’s comes down to how you observe the scene.

I myself, am a cosplayer who just started summer last year which makes me fall under the new generation of cosplayers. More or less, I am genuinely into the hobby as people who are genuinely into it who started way before I even started attending conventions. I know for a fact that having fun matters more than to rant and even look down on people.

My advice to you is that this community is not for judging about anything. It is just something to be immersed. Doesn’t matter if you have to cosplay or not. You’re just there to see it.

    • Fated Blue said, on February 11, 2011 at 11:16 pm

…and I saw it. So that instantly gives me the right to judge it.

You all look the same; not an ounce of individuality left; you all became “unique”.

You’re there for the fun? Yeah, that’s what they all say. Sooner or later, you’ll be there because you HAVE to be there. You HAVE to please the people. You HAVE to be seen on the internet; on someone’s photo album. To be included in some so-called elite circle of cosplayers who always get featured on TV or in some dumb pro-photog’s shoots.

I dare you to cosplay for fun.

      • Romeo said, on February 11, 2011 at 11:33 pm

Yes, you’ve seen it. Yes, you’re judging it. Yet, at the end, it’s just you and your opinions.

I don’t know about cosplayers nowadays looking all the same. Question is…does it matter? Does it matter if we’re unique? Would it do much good for the hobby if we all looked the same or if we all had our own flavor to it?

Generalizing is very unbecoming even for someone as bitter as yourself. You’d immediately judge people right off the bat. I guess you don’t know any cosplayers in this generation who are in it for the fun. Or should I say, you refuse to know any of them. But hey, these are me and my opinions, right?

One or some number of people who you feel some resentment at is not the whole community nor are the one who you’d call ELITES in cosplaying.

And as for the dare? I’ve just done it. 🙂

  2. Fated Blue said, on February 12, 2011 at 2:18 am

LOL yeah. It’s me and my opinions. Let me also tell you that this blog is actually a collection of my opinions. Or did you just realize that a while back?

Of course you wouldn’t know crap about what I just said. You’re one of them. Do dogs know they’re dogs? Do idiots know they’re idiots? If you belong to something then there’s no way for you to know that you’re labeled differently, sometimes extremely, from what you think you are. Immediately judge them? So, is like observing for like 2 and a half years immediate? How long should I observe cosplayers of today for it to not be considered immediate?

And where did I judge ALL cosplayers? I didn’t generalize. You were just too mad to read carefully. Read it again and you’ll see how I carefully placed my words so it won’t hurt any particular cosplayer. Heck, all you need to read is the last few paragraphs or something. Unless you’re really dumb, you should be able to get a few words right.

Unless you are pertaining to personal judgment which is really stupid of you if you do. Why? Because I haven’t pinpointed anyone in particular in the cosplay community. Unless you consider RG as a regular cosplayer, you have nothing. I could’ve wrote some things about Gian or some known perv but I didn’t. You know why? Because I don’t judge people that way. I judge what they do but not what they are.

And did the things I wrote matter? Does everyone wearing the same thing every time matter? Does everyone cosplaying poorly matter? I don’t know, if you think it does then it does. I think it matters but I don’t know about you. You seem to be okay with whatever happens to your hobby, which is actually just being indifferent and amoral towards something you seem to care for. Which in turn, makes you a crappy human being who only cares about yourself and how you won’t mind seeing your little hobby slowly turn to garbage since you’re all so “unique” (which is funny since, well, define “unique”) and that you shouldn’t care what your fellow “cosplayers” do to your hobby even if it makes you all look painstakingly similar to jejemons. Although jejemons are actually better than you since they literally don’t give a damn on what other people say to begin with. And all that because you were too indifferent to speak up and instead brood your inner frustrations on innocent bloggers like me.

Seriously, you did say this was my opinion in the first place. I think I shouldn’t be the one to decide whether or not to take this blog to heart. Can’t your brain process that simple fact anymore?

And who told you this blog was about being bitter? That’s the mistake every conceited human makes whenever they’re being judged negatively. It’s merely an observation and a comparison; a statement I wanted everyone to know. I’m bitter? Pot calling the kettle black? You’re the one who’s bitter. You wouldn’t have reacted in such a way if you weren’t to begin with. You would have realized that I am only stating facts.

You’re actually a perfect example of those people who hate that one single hate comment amongst a sea of good ones. That’s one fact proved right by you.

You’re all the same. Really. If you were smart, you wouldn’t have replied to this since you stated that you thought this was a “bitter-blog”. But in doing so, you just proved how right I am. Which is ironic since here you are, trying to prove how wrong I am in what I stated. Which is also dumb since, as you mentioned, this is a pool of opinions to begin with.

I guess idiots really don’t know they’re idiots. But hey, these are me and my opinions, right?

  3. Romeo said, on February 12, 2011 at 6:05 am

My, my, my. Getting so defensive now are we? 😀 Anyone’s blog is in the accepted case, someone’s opinion (not unless if you’re a news blog or something).

I would know that I’m not one of that you’d say cosplayers since I am more aware of my actions and that I am not so judgmental as you would be. And of couse, I wouldn’t know anything what you’ve said. I’m not pretentious. You can’t be an elite since you don’t sound like one or at least you’d like to think that you are one, which still makes you esoteric. You can be insular though. 😀

You’re jumping to too much ideas that you failed to see that you said something of recent cosplayers. Isn’t that synonymous to cosplayers that we see now?

You’re right. I am indifferent with what’s currently about. Why? It’s not like everything’s all poo now with the hobby, when you can always see the better side to it. You just chose the poo over to dog food, which makes you lack enough sense to disregard it.

I chose to be indifferent ’cause it helps me with my hobby and enables me to make friends with a broader range of people. Cosplayers who just wore the same thing over and over or cosplayers who do their thing inadequately really doesn’t matter. At least to me. Why? Does it really do much harm to you? Is the whole Megamall or SMX a romping area for you? Does it have to be of good quality every time? They don’t cosplay for you, sir. They’re not there to caress your sneery ego. They do it for themselves. And by your definition of some entities within the subculture, that’d make you a jejemon too. (Again, you’re being pretentious and insular)

So by not going to conventions since everything’s the same, comparing how it before to now, repeated use of quotes (e.g. “wonderful world of cosplaying”, “cosplayers”, “victim”) and all that name-calling jazz, yeah I guess you’re not bitter. If I’m conceited then there probably is no word to how describe you if you’re not one. LOL.

That thing you say about someone who can’t just let go hate comments applies to you too. You even went far as to question me if I WERE genuinely cosplaying for the fun of it or not? You even dared me what I already am doing.

Do also remind me when I said that this was a bitter blog. This particular entry is bitter yet I won’t immediately say that the whole blog is. Here you are on and on what’s a smart thing to do or say and who’s the smarter one. Look like I won’t say anything anymore since you’re trapped in your own little, unreceptive funland. 😀

    • Fated Blue said, on February 12, 2011 at 9:32 am

Wow. I quoted what you said on my last reply. But I guess you don’t read your own comments. Not my fault. You also really don’t read between the lines. You take things too literally. There’s no hope in explaining things to someone who can’t see his/her own faults. You say I’m defensive, I say I’m interpreting my own blog for you.

You can’t understand this blog because you literally have no idea what I’m talking about. You said you’ve just started so that entails the fact that you have this spark that makes you hate everyone who criticizes the hobby. Which in turn makes you unable to accept faults and negative opinions maturely. All cosplayers start that way. Don’t take my word for it. Ask Jin Joson. If you know her. But you probably don’t. If you do know her, then you probably don’t know half the crap she went through in life ever since she started cosplaying.

You’re also a close-minded person; unable to see through the veil of what seems to be a mere hate blog. Let me tell you something, and I’ll quote it since you probably missed this part and just skipped to replying bitterness:

“I have respect for Filipino cosplayers. It’s not like I lost hope but it’s just that I’m disappointed on how the current generation of cosplayers, though more in number, can’t somehow follow in the footsteps of their pioneers.”

I’m saying cosplaying was better 5 years ago not simply because the arts were better then. Cosplaying as a whole was better 5 years ago because it was drama-free, hate-free, and most of all, perv-free.

You chose to look on the bright side since you still can’t see what’s wrong with the community. You’re indifferent because you are selfish. You care more about what would benefit you than what would benefit the hobby as a whole. Just imagine if the whole community was like you. Actually, just look at the Philippines as a whole and you’ll know what’s happening to your hobby; a community full of people who cares about no one and just cares about his or her own greedy lifestyle.

You say you love cosplaying and it’s so fun but you don’t care what happens to it. You say you don’t care if people stop being creative. I say cosplaying is literally being creative.

It doesn’t do harm to me but I care for it because I found very good people in the world of Filipino cosplaying. I don’t cosplay yet I rant like I did. I didn’t own a DSLR but I tried to take the best moments of cosplaying using a mere Sony cybershot back in the day. Unlike you, I actually want the community to be better. I want the community to stay strong and flourish. I want the respect (for them and for themselves) cosplayers had back then. I can’t stand seeing the youth of Filipino cosplaying going down the wrong road paved by idiots who thought they shouldn’t care about other cosplayers. I can’t stand seeing cosfail because it reduces the hobby to a mere dress-up competition. Mahiya naman kayo sa mga nagpapakahirap gumawa ng costume.

You probably won’t understand anything now. But you’ll get this all one day. Everything’s only a matter of time. When that time does come, drop by this blog and read what you wrote. I can’t wait to see your reaction then.

The same “tulong” your comment made. It’s obviously for my personal gain. It’s practically common sense.

Pero we can’t blame all the cosplayers dahil marami pa rin ang mga magagaling. Are you kiddin’ us? No comment na lang. Remember the late 2009-2010? Grabe! Halos linggo-linggo eh may convention.

Sana this year eh maging maganda. Natutuwa nga ako dahil nakaka-ilang event pa lang ngayong taon. Mas ok na yung kaunti ang conventions pero well organized kesa sa kaliwa’t-kanan nga eh poorly organized naman. Tama?

  8. Prussian Carmine said, on May 19, 2011 at 8:57 pm

I totally agree. I started cosplaying only last year, but I’ve known cosplay ever since I was a child. It’s a pity that I started cosplaying so late already — when it’s just a matter of being in a skimpy dress and armored suits, and not being in character anymore. I know lots of people who ‘cosplay’ characters that they don’t even know — nagkataon lang na eye-catching yung character, kaya go!. As a cosplayer I make sure that I cosplay only those I really like, and somehow, I manage to maintain this ideal. But I totally agree with your, ehem, rants, because it’s what I see in the cosplay world as well. Plus the media, every-week-mini-conventions, and whatnot are making cosplay such a mediocre hobby. Dati, pag may nalaman kaming cosplayer, it would be like ‘Wow! Galing naman!’ but now, it’s just a mere “K. Whatever.”
I hope the cosplay here in the Philippines will be elite, precise, and back to its former glory. Because right now, it feels kind of cheap and butchered. 😦

    • Fated Blue said, on July 27, 2011 at 1:22 pm

Just beat them in their own game by giving your best in cosplaying. Get rid of the “tama na yan” or “pwede na ‘to” concept. But it’s not always about the details. Oh no. That’s the one mistake cosplayers and onlookers make.

You see, dumb cosplayers cosplay just for the sake of. Great cosplayers, however, cosplay with their heart and not with their money. That’s the difference. Rather, was the difference. I barely see these great cosplayers when I’d pass by some event accidentally.

  9. Random gurl said, on May 20, 2011 at 2:22 am

I’m only about 14 years old and I agree with EVERYTHING you’ve said.

Yeah, as much as possible, I’m still trying to see the positives but I’m more likely to take on international events rather than local because some of the people I’ve met, like in Singapore, are unbelievably nice and awesome.

I will quit cosplaying HERE when there would be actual tv programs about cosplay just like what Alodia’s doing on the show LOL, which isn’t funny at all though it’s a comedy.

Sure, the media is trying to make it interesting but IT’S STILL AN INSULT.

The media is like acting, it’s all scripted and FAKE.

Goodness’ sake, idiots. Nobody chose Alodia or Chienna or any other whore to represent the cosplay community (aside from their delusional fapboys) so STFU.

If Alodia goes to FHM later on (which I’m sure she will). OH GOD.
Can’t even describe how horrible it’d be for the society.

In my first convention here, in the Philippines, it was in June 2010, just around last year, I’ve experienced being made fun of by a group of guys.

It was downright rude and insulting.

But fortunately, this girl pulled me out and stopped them. The guard even scolded them afterwards. I tripped one of them on my way outside as a little payback.

I usually take photos of cosplayers who don’t get noticed during cons and NOT the whores who get photo-bombed. They’ve got a cool costume and all. But I couldn’t give the slightest shit ’cause they have no idea what their character is so their poses are just what some lame shit camera-whores do.

    • Fated Blue said, on May 22, 2011 at 10:00 pm

I sympathize with you. My reply may sound generic but I actually do sympathize with the random people I “meet” across the vast web of internet.

And hey, for a 14-year old, you write as if you’re an adult. Cool. Teenagers mature faster nowadays, I guess.

Long time no look!! este No see my friend anima9

I love your Blog, especially this entry Well said. I don’t know friend but, the cosplayer that I know that is entering showbiz is ALODIA GOSIENGFIAO.

So I guess that’s what you’re pointing out in this entry??. TBH my friend anima9, I don’t like alodia anymore, I find her very OVERRATED, she’s destroying cosplay community by using it as a stepping stone to enter show business. I remember the times when she’s cosplaying on a LOW PROFILE, no media, low publicity, No BullSh!T.

But now to be honest with you, I can’t helped but to think that this “Hitad!” Alodia, is ruining this cosplay community and trying to destroy it by herself.

Though I know anima9, and I’m very sure that you know her and she knows you personally, I guess that she can read your blog and the comments here (If she have time to read LOL), Oh yeah one of her fave word these days are LOL. But honestly I find that show so GAY and lame, alodia’s skill in TV hosting is embarrassing she should stop this stupidity. And I don’t find that show so funny but corny in every angle.

Anima9, be brave my man, I know that you are staring to dislike her too by using that cosplay thing for publicity. Stand up and show it…. no no no no man, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying this just to lure you, I just feel it that you are disappointed by what you’ve seen in this cosplay community these days. VERY BAD LIGHT I say!

And lastly, thanks for posting this entry I hope that many cosplayers/otakus will read this and comment so that they will gain a little awareness of what’s happening in this community. and to learn NOT TO USE COSPLAYING A STEPPING STONE TO ENTER SHOWBIZ. That’s so gay

Cosplay in the Philippines, has cheapened. In my opinion. Increasing in quantity but decreasing in quality..

I agree as well. contrary to what Romeo mention above, i do not think you are bitter. I have been cosplaying since 2003 and yes, I have observe the same negative changes too. But on the other hand, there are positive changes. since we have been cosplaying this long we were able to see how the hobby has evolved here in the philippines. since you romeo just started this summer, you tend to look at it with fresher eyes and more enthusiasm. i was like that too when i first started. so please do not get me or fated blue wrong. i am not looking down at newbies or anything. i have seen cosplayers from the “new generation” who are really really good. and if you really love the hobby, i wish you well kse masaya naman tlaga mgcosplay. but yun nga madami tlagang nananamantalang pervs and mga KSP na sumasakay lng.

As now that I’m on my desk, I’ll give my response as sure as possible. Pardon the profanity as this is how I’d like to say it. Will try to minimize it as much as possible though

Funny, over at our blog recently there’s this deluded anon going about “I’ll save you from a life of hate and bashing” and that shit. It’s in between funny and retarded. But that’s another story.

Interesting points coming from some of the commenters, especially the whole “why the fuck are there monthly conventions” thing. Back when there were gaps between cons (usually 2-3 months between each), it was cool. Everyone had time to prepare. Everyone helped each other out in the forums.

Back in 2005-06 when I was starting out, sure, I was probably like one of these newbies admittedly. Difference being well, learning how to hide power levels outside of conventions, and common fucking sense.

I’ll reiterate time and time again, as with my older blog entries (as The Hat Wearing Man I think), the hobby went to shit when people took it for granted, as with every other in-thing the lowest common denominator got their hands on. It happened to teenybopper music, it happened with rock music, and now with Black Music and Korean Music too. Mostly evident in convention attendee quality.

I mean, think about it. Why are they scolded (and they’re bitter about it)? Because they forgot their common sense and are now mucking up the malls. The embarrassment of me on behalf of my friend as she was scolded by some old grumpy lady (btw she was wearing something pretty normal, like casual normal), and was accused to be a “dirty cosplayer” or some shit.

    Rotten apples, so to speak.

It doesn’t hurt to try to look at the bright side, though. I mean, come on. There are people like the small group of Toku/Robot cosplayers who are tightly knit and one-up each other in costume quality, some women who actually know what they dress up as, and people still genuinely into the hobby.

Oh, hi. As someone who’s been going to convention for x years now, let me say that I do agree with the points you’ve raised. A lot of people definitely miss the old days. I’m pretty sure that you’ll agree with that. Everything’s going mainstream, and there are people who don’t like it when their hobbies go mainstream. Heck, even I abandoned watching Death Note when I discovered that I’ll be grouped with a lot of people who only saw the characters and didn’t mind the plot at all.

Anyway, the new gens are doing it for fun, you have to consider that. It’s the same way that the cosplayers from the early 2000s did. They just wanted to have fun. But in this kind of progression, we’ll (yes, including the frequent con goers) will fall into the same pit: all that drama. That’s what makes it ugly in my opinion.

    1. You keep praising Alodia, when for a fact she is actually the epitome of what you stated. Her “Gamer” photo with the pek-pek shorts and black stockings? Classy. Drama over the judging that she only has 10% of the vote? She totally went over board with it. Her choice of characters? Aren’t you noticing a lot of boob in them lately, when she used to dress up in full on gunbound costume, covering every bit of her skin? Posting photos on her FB, some of which she is either too daft to realize that it can be taken the wrong way, or she really is craving for the attention. Remember that post about her forgetting her towel and wiping her body with tissue?

    2. You say you hate those people who are angry for receiving one bad comment over 1000 ❤ from "pervs". You get one decent, well thought-off reply that disagreed with you *points at romeo* and you go ballistic. If it didn't bother you so much because you "kick ass", why the hell reply several times, wanting to feel more superior than someone who has a different opinion?

Gotta love self contradiction at its finest. You're seeing the community too much from GT's view. Get your dick out his ass and check what's wrong with you first, because you can rant as much as you want, but the sick sad truth is nobody's gonna give a shit and it's going to continue being like this. You may kick ass here, but people like Romeo and I will still rule the world, and you're gonna have to eat that gag and bound to your miserable loser life.

    • Fated Blue said, on May 25, 2011 at 7:44 pm

      1. I praised her patience with hundreds of insults and negative remarks. Where did I “keep” praising her again? And I don’t really give a rat’s ass on how much of a fan you are, knowing everything I don’t really give a damn about.

      2. How many good comments did I get before romeo posted? Yeah, count that. That’s how many good comments I have before this post suddenly spiked an interest. Let’s turn the tables then. How many say Filipino Cosplaying is so awesome? Probably thousands or millions because of media popularity. How many say otherwise? Probably just hundreds. Imagine that you’re the blogger. Those millions of fans are good comments. Us hundreds say otherwise and you go ballistic over our DIFFERENT OPINION.

See how you just dug your own grave? Don’t worry, I understand. You’re not really thinking about what you’re saying simply because you are driven with rage and all sorts of instinctive reflexes that you no longer think twice before you type.

It may look like I went ballistic to someone who’s not used to arguing online but I wasn’t. I was explaining my blog to someone who chose to avert his/her/its eyes to how much degradation cosplaying has already went thru (and it’s still continuing). He didn’t have a different opinion. He simply didn’t understand the context of my blog, mistaking it for an anti-cosplay article. Much like you did. But I’m not gonna reiterate my statements, again, for one more idiot. Just read what I told romeo and you should be able to get at least half of what I wanted to say. If not, well, too bad LOL

And lol @you taking this post seriously. It’s people like you that destroy the hobby that the first generation took so much effort to build. You practically don’t care about cosplaying except your own well being. You and romeo are the reasons why cosplaying as a whole has become so dirty and just annoying.

People like you and romeo will really rule the world alright. Because you’re like cockroaches. Pests to us who know how great cosplaying WAS and how it will never be like that because of cockroaches like you who keep on multiplying and won’t seem to die out no matter what we do.

I don’t see it the way GT is seeing it (or saw it, whatever). I simply just SEE it. I’m not blind. You’re not blind. The only difference is the experience I have compared to yours. I know what it was like back then so I have the right to compare. How about you? How can you know what happened back in the day? (Shit! I sound so old for a 21 year old)

That’s right. You can’t. Now go cry to your mom instead of writing her name for your barely-thought-out comment.

It’s sad. Really. It is. There’s no hope for this hobby anymore. The excitement is gone. It’s all a bunch of pervs and idiots who patronize the pervs. I’ll have fun with my miserable loser life while you’re all stuck there, inside that little dark hole full of dirt, only to realize one day that we were right all along: That it’s people like you who make “Filipino Cosplaying” ugly.

ANima9, i feel you. Well cosplay community in the Philippines change alot. Yeah it becomes so mainstream. But still cosplay is just cosplay.

While you have a point, cosplaying in the Philippines is no longer “just cosplay”. Cosplay here can’t go without dramuh.

And somehow, I agree with you.

It’s not just the same anymore… I used to have the passion, but it’s slowly deteriorating. It’s sad, really. 😦

So I really thing there’s no need to reply to those who disagree. it is your opinion, and everyone is entitled to it.

    • Fated Blue said, on May 31, 2011 at 8:43 pm

I hope you understand that I’m replying out of courtesy and not out of necessity. I’m so grateful they read my blog, I can’t let them go thinking they’ve been ignored.

Fated Blue, I admit hindi ako cosplayer, but I’ve had a share of conventions in the past couple of years and have actually thought up some wicked stuff that could probably drop some jaws like never before (given access to awesome resources), but I think you made a lot of sense with your blog.

People like Romeo and “your Mom” are truly conceited turds, probably along the lines of what Mike Abundo does in responding to anti-Alodia vids on Youtube.

As for the quality of cosps, well, I admit it sucks seeing the same old cosplayers rolling out the same old stuff every time…like how many times have you even seen variations of Iron Man, Green Lantern na bading, or even Naruto Shippuden na mukhang binili lang sa Comic Alley yung jacket, man?

  23. warmsheet said, on June 10, 2011 at 7:49 pm

I’m not a cosplayer. I was just watching the scene. Before, I used to go to conventions – back when, as stated in earlier posts, it was an occasional event. You’re lucky to attend two to three conventions during that time. And the locations are usually not crowded like a hallway space in Glorietta! 😀

You won’t see a lot of cosplayers before. Anime/Manga conventions lasts two-three days and cosplay event is just one of the activities. And when you see one, HAHAHAAAY! Even though the wig sucks, the swords are limp, etc, you’d feel like hugging that person because at that one moment in time he/she became one of your favorite fictional characters!

The one thing I liked the most during my -ehem- generation were the music events!! More than anime/game, the Japanese music scene very much looked underground. And hey, it’s a bonus when you feel like you’re doing something in the dark hahahhahahaha!! These events were mostly held from afternoon till late evening in UP halls or random spacious bars. One time, when my sister and uncle dropped me off the location and saw random people wearing neon green wigs (they were performers) and punk outfits (because it was mostly JRock) they were like, “WTH?” hahahaha!! But nobody wore obscene clothing (save for some performers… but because they were gothic and such, it’s no big deal. They even looked sexy but relax.) But it is the music that was always the center of attention… and some fan services that, although may looked perverted, were actually funny! Oh my… I miss those times….

The last event I attended was way back 2008 (I think, or late 2007). And it was still decent. There were more people attending cons, though, and organizers can already rent good spaces like Megatrade hall. But there was still decency left. There were more cosplayers than random girl/dude wearing provocative clothes pretending to cosplay. I don’t think I’ll be seeing the Pirates of the Caribean now….

Example scene: I saw Jack Sparrow cosplayer and he totally looked cool (even the whole group) and I was so happy!!
    ME: “JACK!! Pa-picture pls!!”
    COSPLAYER: “Cap’n. Cap’n Jack Sparrow. Don’t forget the Cap’n.”

But that was also the time I personally saw Alodia Gosiengfiao cosplaying as a random school girl. Back then, I’ve been forming a little distaste to how the cosplay scene was gradually changing, but I still squeezed through dozens of men just to see her more clearly and take a good picture. I thought, “What a pretty and sexy girl… she’s really pretty and sexy.” But because she wasn’t cosplaying anyone in particular, there was no geeky happiness for me. (But I really like seeing pretty and sexy girls so I was still happy! :D)

Now… I won’t even bother attending cons. Maybe it’s because I’ve grown up a bit. But meeeeh…. cons looking boring now. No more geeky fun~~~I still wonder, though. Because I like bands performing my favorite Japanese tunes! 😀 Too bad most people now haven’t seen/heard performers like NeoOtaku… Kiseki no hentai hahahahahahahaha (remembers their vocalist). AH!!! Gone are those days~~ aaaah~~~~

Maybe I should start searching for these events! Maybe, just maybe, they retain that “secrecy” and are still being held in obscure places!! 😀

    -warmsheet

    • Fated Blue said, on June 10, 2011 at 8:04 pm

I love the way you described it. It gave me a nostalgic feeling. And I know the Jack Sparrow cosplayer you are referring to AND their group! LOL

Yes, My first ever convention was a L’arc en~ciel convention because my love for JPOP and JROCK would always come first when it came to geekiness.

I also hope secret events (like conventions for cool people ONLY LOL) are also held. It’ll be a good way to keep the “solemnity” of the hobby which has all but lost its integrity.

  24. Adrienne said, on June 13, 2011 at 9:14 am

To Fated Blue, I so totally agree with you. ^_^b Cosplay is mostly just a mass gathering of wannabes nowadays… It’s so sad. There are still good cosplayers left; surrounded by fake cosplayers/celebrity wannabes. Have you guys noticed that almost every “cosplayer” make their own facebook fan page and bug people to like their page? Come on, seriously desperate much!
And some kids don’t even know who they’re really cosplaying. Just as long as they have this little “brief background knowledge” of the character then all is fine.

To Romeo, geez quality will always matter D:

I mean, if you’re going out to cosplay a character with poor shiny costumes and sucky props aren’t you just humiliating yourself??? You’re just mocking the character you’re trying to “play”. Better stay at home if that’s the case! You won’t have any much fun being insulted and mocked during the con fyi.

    *** Also, I’ve noticed that a lot of people now are starting to “cosplay” korean idols/groups. I think it’s kinda… wrong…. 😐
What are your reactions to this?

    • Fated Blue said, on June 13, 2011 at 9:32 pm

@korean wannabes: It would be okay if they were portraying it well enough and not just merely resembling them. Kumbaga sa cosplay, di lang costume, pati roleplay dapat. Kaya nga CosPlay eh. Costume Play. The costume is just 1/2 of it.

Bakit ngayon ko lang nabasa ito. Nice article!

Hmm yes, the good old years of Cosplay, where cosplay/anime conventions are RARE like ‘once in a blue moon’ event (1 – 2 conventions a year) but now… they’re like twice per month?! or every month…all thanks to OZINE? i think its Ozine… >_>.

The last time I went to a convention to cosplay…hmm…Toycon and I think its was 3rd? or 4th? where they’re few (yet quantity) cosplayers and con-goers. Like warmsheet said about getting wasted and the wig & props are totally messed up, it’s still fun since cosplayers are in their ‘character’, anime fan con-goers will try to call cosplayers by their anime character name, and for non-anime congoers, they asked the cosplayer what Anime title and character are they portraying.

no drama, no scandals, no politics, just pure 100% fun conventions

    but now…

I dunno, all that I can remember in Toycon 10? (2011) was DLRs, pervs, raging fangirls & boys, whiteknights, and etc… it was awful D:< . My 1st convention that I went home dragging lower half of m body, after 7yrs 'resting'

I wish I can go back to that year, but no choice times changed.

Cosplayers here in the Philippines are more on quantity than quality. And more photograpervs.
Too bad I missed that cosplay community that you are talking five or six years ago.. 😦
Sayang di ko naabutan because I wasn’t aware of cosplaying or conventions 6 years ago..
I wish I experienced that cosplay community that you were saying years ago..
But now I think it’s far from possible.. 😦

    • Fated Blue said, on July 9, 2011 at 8:50 pm

I try to be positive but that’s just making it hurt the more I witness the gatherings. Go with your friends and just enjoy what you CAN enjoy. Don’t think too much out of it. Don’t expect too much. Just go there to get a few snapshots here and there.

  27. humptydumpty said, on July 9, 2011 at 1:13 am

I kind of agree with you on some of the things listed here especially the poorly made one cosplay. I dreamed of cosplaying way back in the past (when I was just in high school) pero di natuloy nung high school mainly because I needed money and have no work, and I didn’t want to burdern my parents. I always thought na pagnagcocosplay kelangan kuha mo ung character. And I never really went to any cosplay cons kahit matagal na akong fan, pics lang sa internet kuntento na kasi ako. The cosplay mania on Oct will be my first one and after I read your rant, mejo natatakot na kong pumunta. Dx

For me pumanget ang cosplay scene nagsumikat na si Alodia, when she became known throughtout the Phil as Cosplay Queen at nagguest na xa sa TV, kasi dun nagsimula magisip ang tao na ‘pwede silang sumikat through cosplay’. 😦

  28. Fated Blue said, on July 9, 2011 at 8:52 pm

Your first? Try the advice I gave above: Go with your friends. Venturing alone, expecting too much, will be the ultimate breaker in your part. You’ll end up just taking pics and just that. You’ll never enjoy it alone, that’s for sure.

By the way, you don’t need to read this if you don’t want to, it’s your decision. :3

Well, the fact that people care enough to blog about Cosplay is enough for me. 🙂
I may be stupid. Or maybe insane, Heaven forbid if I didn’t admit that.

I mean, everyone’s got their own opinion, gotta respect that.
I couldn’t fight the urge to post a comment because all the posts and the blog in itself have pretty good arguments.

We can’t help it, some people are quite proud of cosplay even though it’s a fact that they’re copying something they’re not. I think it’s a talent actually, on my humble opinion. It’s like taking pride in maintaining a exactly passing grade rather than getting a higher or lower grade. I know, some of you (not all) will not get my logic. “why get passing grade when you can give more?” You see, it’s not about how great your costume looks or how cute you look in your clothing. The more accurate you get, the better. Just so you know, it’s hell much more difficult to just have “enough,” not more, not less. People who read my comment don’t need to agree with me. heck, they can disagree with me all they want. It’s not like I can tell them what to do. Its your life buddy. I just hope you don’t hate me for my opinion, cuz that’s what people generally do (again, my stupid opinion) but I’m sure your smart, so you won’t.

Unfair? Injustice? Yeah, that’s totally true. However, (I know you already know this but I just want to say it, but it really doesn’t matter you can just stop reading when you want to, no one’s forcing you to read this comment~! ;D Juz saying.) Life’s not always fair, is it? Hahaha, part of me is crazy, so ignore me if you want.

What else did I want to say? Oh yeah, I cosplay too~! Not always though. Although, I’d love to cosplay more often if ever given the opportunity to. I’d love to go to many conventions like you guys do~! unfortunately for me, my observations might be SAMPLE ERRORs. I mean I get jealous whenever I see people cosplay well~! But I guess I realized, doesn’t that mean by being jeally over it means you admit that person cosplayed well? If people comment horrible things about you, think of it this way~ Hey,

I admire people who are able to rant through the net cuz they have the courage to post (according to the dictionary) “insulting” if not, then implied insults without the slightest bit of caring. Correct me if I’m wrong here. This is my judgement. I’m human, can’t always be right.

I’m not that different from any of you (or so I hope~! XD). I get mad. I rant. I ignore. I eat. I sleep. I procrastinate. etc.

I know what I like and dislike.

I know I’m insane. I know I’m a cosplayer. I know I possibly hurt other peoples feelings through the things I do. I know I contradict myself. I know I say I dislike the fact that people can’t get over a single hate-comment but when it comes to me, I argue with the person who gives me a hate-comment. (then I realize I was being pretty stupid.) ” Kung sinong papatul sa baliw ay mas-baliw.” (sorry for my Filipino~) “Those who fight back to an idiot is an even worse idiot.”

    I know I’m a human being.

Do you know what you are?
Cuz, i’m sure you know it only counts as important when you can say what you really are. 8D

Wow, I made a long post, I didn’t intentionally plan for this. Then again, since when do I plan for anything? lol XD

    • Fated Blue said, on July 26, 2011 at 9:56 pm

Your post could’ve weighed more if you didn’t play safe.

Are you that afraid of being disagreed on? It’s the internet and your on a pseudonym (God forbid that’s your real name). What’s stopping you from unleashing everything? Are you that afraid of being criticized for who you really are?

      • Camile the not-so-awesome said, on July 27, 2011 at 2:24 am

Yup, I’m afraid. rather, I’d prefer not to pick a fight I’m better off avoiding. That’s just how I am. so forgive me if I wasn’t unleashing enough. What’s wrong with playing safe (as most would call it) when every word you say on the internet stays on the internet. nothing is ever permanently deleted here. Anyone can copy a blog, reblog it, even faster before you can erase the mistakes we make in our posts realizing we might have just ruined a life or worse, a community. =3

and yeah, just for your info, this really is my real name (except for the not-so-awesome part but I’m pretty sure that could be my middle name). Believe it or not. I don’t want to be rash, so I’ll “try” to be careful despite the fact I’m insane. >8D

I know you might be thinking either “This person is too freaking honest…” or the most likely one: “Wow, who knew there wasn’t a limit to being an idiot.” or whatever comes into your head. Perverse, eccentric, weird as I am, at least I know when I can and can’t handle a responsibility.

just kidding. sometimes I forget too about responsibility shit. I don’t wanna be a hypocrite. 😀

There are stuff that I do agree on with you; however, there are also a bunch of stuff that I don’t agree with. “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” is what they say but apparently, I haven’t swallowed everyone’s ideas from their posts here, including yours. So, hopefully, you can deduce that I have something I stand for.

call me a coward, sure. I know what I am. 🙂

      • Fated Blue said, on July 27, 2011 at 12:56 pm

The point of my post is that your pretty much an anon and yet you’re not upto using your anonymity to its full potential, which restricts your own freedom of speech which is insane since you’re doing it to yourself.

        Also:
        1. Everyone’s a hypocrite, some more than others.

        2. So you’re now assuming what kind of a person I am by “knowing what I’m thinking”? That’s quite arrogant. Or are you a know-it-all?

        3. I don’t really care whether people agree with me or not. You can’t please everyone and that’s a given. So I don’t need to be told whether you liked it or not.

Just say what you have in mind and I’ll welcome it the way I do with every comment in my blog. I’ll treat you all on equal footing regardless of your opinion.

Lastly, I’m not calling you anything. You’ll be the one responsible for that.

GREAT blog! I couldn’t have said it better. Really really enjoyed reading the first replies here–you know, the “debate”. Hahaha! Well, for the Philippine cosplay, umm… let’s just hope for the better. It’s really sad to see something special to become a “mainstream” thing just because someone “famous” is doing it or everybody else is doing it. So anyway, love this blog post and yes, stand up to your opinions. *wink*

In any case, thanks for reading. It means a lot to me. And let’s not point the finger on blackmage9. Everyone had a hand in this mess.

  32. Aikaagrees! said, on July 26, 2011 at 12:50 am

Before I start talking, I’d just like to sort this out. Why were you arguing with Romeo when you oh, so, knew that he was new to the cosplay hobby? Lots of people have their own perspectives on cosplay. It’s different to be watching the hobby from actually doing it. Romeo was just stating opinions from his P.O.V. being a cosplayer himself. As for me, I’m neutral. I don’t mind on what people awknowledge cosplay to be as long as they have enough common sense on having a little decency in every effort they put into the hobby.

I perfectly agree with the old and new gen. of cosplay. As I started cosplay 3 years ago, it never actually occured to me that cosplay events mattered that much. The gen. of cosplayers before me were my influences since of course, they inspired me. Not to be bitter to my sempais but sometimes it would be best if the elder group of cosplayers would try to set a standard for quality cosplay. Most of them WANT to think that cosplay is for ‘fun’ and for fun purposes only. Cosplay was introduced to us by the first cosplay event that occured on Oct. 30, 2009, I believe. The cosplays weren’t much of quality and the population was still growing from then on, tho’ I’d like to compliment those cosplayers for portaraying the character from physical to personality attributes.

Looking back, I’d like to confess that cosplay definitely changed together with the growing number of participants. I do not like it when they go ballistic just after hearing some negative comments about them. Sure, they can get mad. They can get furious only after they reflect on what is commented.

Lots say, ‘Jejemon ang mga cosplayers’ or ‘weird sila’ cuz we don’t portray the characters with much effort anymore. I sympathize with you.

I do not like cosplayers Alodia since fame got to her head. I appreciate her as a person but not a cosplayer. Her cosplays now are really revealing that it makes pervs drool everywhere. I mean, c’mon, she does not even know on how the character she cosplays acts. I’d appreciate it if she’s stuck with photoshoots NOT T.V broadcasting. =A=;a

I wish cosplayers these days still had a sense of decency.
Tho’ we can’t please everyone so let’s just see where this takes us. :))

      1. I never argued. I merely translated my blog for him. Why? You know, because I oh, so, knew he was new to the damn hobby. I also merely stated my own P.O.V. having known cosplayers from the first to the last gen, having experienced being a judge, being active in cosplay charity events, participating in cosplay-oriented forums, defending cosplayers from trolls, participated in cosplay conventions and events, went to various “offline” cosplay parties, etc.

And if you would look closely, what you read right there is also called an opinion. Romeo’s opinion = my opinion as well. Was his opinion so great that I didn’t have the right to clarify things? Being misunderstood has led to more troubles than peace. Plus the fact that I can’t just ignore a reply as innocent and naive as his.

      2. THE first cosplay event happened on 10/30/09? LOL

      3. I particularly think, though they share similar traits, Jejemons are far better than cosplayers when it comes to doing what they like. They literally don’t give a damn what society thinks of them. While the other side will do whatever it take to obliterate haters. That makes them jejemons much more mature than cosplayers. Which is funny since jejemons barely know shit compared to cosplayers. And yes, that was a stereotype.

I strongly agree with most of your opinions, dude. Is it okay if I include some passages of your article in my English paper? Uhm, maybe I could quote you, or something. Of course, I’ll cite you as my source. If that’s fine with you lang. Haha.

Your call. I wrote this with the sole intention of merely venting. It’ll be a bonus, and a privilege, if I were to be quoted in some blog or article.

      Thanks. 🙂

I’m with you! ^_^ I stopped cosplaying because people have become so rude! I rarely see a person who truly portrays his or her character, and why are those girls wearing micro mini skirt? and they’re everywhere! It’s like they’re just using cosplay events to get attention in a not so very decent way. Also, I think Alodia-san shouldn’t wear such revealing clothes. She’s an idol to many, but she’s not a cosplayer. She’s a model.

    • Fated Blue said, on September 12, 2011 at 9:20 pm

Well, she did joke about not cosplaying anymore. That WAS a joke, right? I mean, she’s still cosplaying now. And let’s not forget she announced that a day before April Fool’s (or sometime before then).

Thanks for finding my rather opinionated blog approving of your own.

I hope you realize that besides Japan, The Philippines is the number one country that cosplays, and frankly – they’re pretty kick ass.

I agree with the Mr. blogger.

I used to be fascinated with them people who can pull off them “anime” characters, especially the Japanese. Pero ibang usapan na ‘pag mga Pinoy na ang nag-co-cospaly. Nadudugyutan at najojologan ako. Well, Alodia Go-sex-fiao doesn’t look half-bad, but she’s overrated anyway.

“Cosplaying” the time when them lifeless losers temporarily feel they ain’t the society’s culls. The time when they feel they can be all powerful as there’s a whole shitload of ’em.

(‘di na’ko makapaghintay sa mga papalag. 🙂 )

    Hey Mr. Blogger :))

Actually, ngayon ko lang nabasa to’. Hahaha. Pero i’m so lucky that i read this.

Totally agree po ako sa inyo. Kaka-start ko pa pong magcosplay last Ozine Fest (2012) and I’m still 14 years old. Sympre, first time po namin makapunta sa isang big convention so super overwhelmed po kami and amaze na amaze na kami sa mga cosplayers, but after nun na-realize namin na..

Other Cosplayers just cosplay para umepal, pumampam, magpasikat, magpapapansin.

They even don’t mind the pervs out there.. like Chienna Filomeno’s photo. Nakakadiri.

I also hate Cosplay being mainstream already. Kasi, yung iba, magcocosplay lang para gumaya, makiuso. Nakakainis.

No Offense, but cosplay became a load of shit. Sana bumalik uli sa dati.

Kung sanang pinanganak ako dati pa. Well, never mind. But I totally agree with all of your rantings Blogger-san.

You have reached cosplay nirvana. Be careful now, lots of naive defenders are on the prowl. They’re all just narrow minded 🙂

    Look out,
It’s getting worst. You should make a part two of this blog post. XD

    On topic:
I’ve possibly done the same as you, booking tickets, taking snapshots and uploading them as fast as I can when I get home. Even attending a cosplay convention even though there’s a storm and there are black outs everywhere. I miss good old times wherein I knew everyone and that we weren’t just out for people we could ‘use’ or ‘step on’ for fame or to be seen on TV.

But, am not stopping. I’ve been making costumes since 2005 or so and honestly? Am not leaving just because it got famous (And people are getting the wrong idea)– I’ll stay until it becomes, as you say, ‘jologs’ again.

I’m glad people like you still have the heart to cosplay and not just to model.

  39. Rose said, on August 10, 2012 at 8:44 am

What ever happened to just cosplaying for FUN, as in, it doesn’t MATTER if you look good or not.
Maybe when YOU first started cosplaying it was about judging others by how their costume looked or if they were in character or not, but NOW it’s just about having fun and making friends…which is what the whole point of cosplaying is, even from the very beginning.
If you don’t like how things are now, don’t blog about it, don’t do anything that involves it.
Just sit on your yard acting like an 80 year old man, yelling at kids to get off your lawn and bitching about ‘back in my day’.
And guess what? I know most of the community who cosplay in my town. None of them are just here to model.

And bitch and me and call me an idiot.
“Most idiots don’t know they’re idiots.”
A lot about your character can be decided just on your comment.
Just because YOU think someone is an idiot doesn’t make them an idiot. Seeing as, apparently you used to be a cosplayer, you SHOULD know that, seeing as everyone thinks we’re all fat perverted men who live in our mothers basements when we’re not.

But I guess some people never learn.

    I’ve been cosplaying since 2007… I think.

And IMO, I think what’s ruining Philippine cosplay is the elitism. That is, elitism from the old generations of cosplayers and observers. People take cosplay as srs bsns when it really shouldn’t be. Yes. It really shouldn’t. Like you said cosplay is a hobby, but it is also an art. Because it’s both an art and a hobby, i believe cosplay is a triad of (costume + roleplay) + enjoyment.

Costume and roleplay go hand in hand because this is what is seen by others and roleplay can be considered somewhat as a “part” of the costume. Enjoyment is a separate entity because only the cosplayer him/herself can verify that. If you take either costume or roleplay away you have an incomplete or poor cosplay. Take enjoyment away, and the person under the costume is merely a mascot, and mascots don’t always enjoy what they do. But elitists fail to realize this. Because they take cosplay too seriously, a beginner cosplayer who lacks roleplay but is enjoying what’s she’s doing is bashed and looked down upon instead of given constructive criticism on how to improve. Just look at the iBilib page on Facebook. If you skip through the troll pics and vanity pictures, there are some beginner cosplayers who get bashed simply because they lack a wig or simply because they posed in a picture out of character. It’s frustrating actually, to see people do this to the newer generation of cosplayers. It gives the impression that we cosplayers are elitist pricks, when some of us aren’t.

Perhaps somepeople don’t put enough effort in their cosplay. But consider that they probably couldn’t afford some parts of their costume so they settle for cheaper alternatives. Cosplay is for everyone, not just rich people. They might start with low quality but give them time and they’ll improve.

Also, i don’t like the mentality that cosplay was better when it wasn’t “mainstream”. Other people from other countries could only wish for this. Because being mainstream means being more socially accepted. So contrary to popular belief, I’m actually glad cosplay is popular here.

Anyway, just had to share my opinion.

    • Fated Blue said, on March 25, 2013 at 8:26 pm

Haven’t had a good quality comment in a while. Might I ask how you came to stumble upon this blog? Just curious.

Had you said those words a few years back, I would’ve done the trouble of refuting each and every line you put effort into. Alas, I’m no longer the enthusiast that I was but a shell of what I was. True, what you say is based on good judgment and whatnot. I agree with your form of opposition; built on solid foundation with much detail on every brick. But I still stay true to when I said cosplaying “here” (as in our country) is better than it is now, being mainstream. I specifically aim at our country.

Why, you ask? Simple: The more a certain art or style is popularized, the more it loses its “sparkle”. It loses its own face, drowned in a crowd of copycats and “just to be called cosplay” cosplayers. I know most SEA countries would wish to have cosplaying popularized and I’m sure they drool on our monthly conventions and events. Yet I myself see how cosplaying has become nothing more than an expensive dress-up game. Rich or poor, it’s not cosplaying if it’s simply dressing differently. I mean, when was dressing-up like a Korean considered cosplay? (Not the boy or girl groups, as in just like some normal fashionista Korean or JROCK fans).

If experience is all they want then go. Even if you spend all your school savings just to cosplay a character you’d starve to be, then do it. If its simply to tell someone that “Nag cosplay din ako dati.” then have your little “yabang”. But by all means, ilagay mo yan sa resume’ mo. I never said anything about it being just for the rich. What I said was that the effort put into this hobby is all but gone i.e. ready-made costumes.

With all that was said, I still agree with you. But let me just ask one thing about your statement: Why is it that you’re unsure as to when you ACTUALLY cosplayed? Do you doubt the “cosplay” you did at first as not “real” cosplay or is this a simple case of memory loss?

      • Nishi said, on March 27, 2013 at 9:50 pm

I found your blog while browsing google on Philippine cosplay. XP

When I mentioned about cosplay not being only for the rich, I was just trying to justify the reason why some cosplayers don’t look as accurate as they should. I didn’t really mean to point you out as someone who looks down on them because of financial problems. But I did come across someone who told me cosplay was for the rich. I raged. D:

I understand your point about it not being that “unique” anymore. But those people who try cosplay only for the heck of it wouldn’t last long, nor would they be noticed. When I see these kinds of people in cons, I ignore them. I only take pictures of those who put a lot of effort in their costumes. And those that know what they’re doing. I don’t really let the others decrease my interest in cosplay, because in the first place I don’t consider them as cosplayers. When I look at them, they’re just con goers in funny clothing. Lol. They can say they are cosplaying all they want, but only those who don’t know as much as a cosplay beginner would really believe them.

And when you say “ready-made costumes”, what do you mean? If you mean those from Comic Alley, like the Naruto costume and Akatsuki costume, even if a person purchases that, he would still need to find a good wig and other accessories to be more accurate. Just buying the costume isn’t enough. This would include commissioned cosplays. I find nothing wrong with buying the costumes. Because as I said, just buying the costume isn’t enough. Effort includes trying to be as accurate as possible: the hair, the props, the roleplay, make-up… Personally, my costumes are commissioned, but when it comes to the props I need, I make them.

As for my not being sure about when I first cosplayed, I just don’t remember if it was 2007 or 2008 when I started. My first cosplay was Haruhi Suzumiya, when she wasn’t so overused yet. Lol.

To me, cosplaying is an art. From the quality of the costume down to the portrayal itself.
It’s not just for the rich, it’s just for people with the love of portraying a character that they actually think they can justify portraying as.

    • Toki said, on July 2, 2013 at 10:54 pm

Agreed on most points in this post. I’ve actually noticed this trend in the cosplay conventions from way back 2010. Great post, man.

Haha. Stumbled upon this blog entry, and I have to say, I have nothing but the purest disdain for cosplay. Nowadays it seems to be full of elitist turbonerds and attention whores.

    • Fated Blue said, on October 29, 2013 at 3:47 pm

Don’t hate everyone. I mean, sure the drama has gotten worse and the new generation seems to think that putting on a mask or some make up makes them cosplayers but I’m sure there are still those rare people who still live up to the standards of old.

  46. Lollyck said, on January 16, 2014 at 3:09 am

Very nice blog entry. Good quality cosplay (COSTplay) comes with MONEY, skill and knowledge on the character you are cosplaying.

    • Fated Blue said, on January 16, 2014 at 10:14 am

While I do not necessarily approve of expensive costumes, I guess the quality itself can often speak volumes of how much you invested to make a costume. I still applaud cosplayers who invest more time than they do money.

      • Lollyck said, on January 16, 2014 at 11:40 pm

Am i safe assuming you haven’t done cosplaying yet? In order to have a good quality cosplay one must have a money to support their needs, like the costume, to buy the needed materials, the make up to make you look accurate with the character you are cosplaying, and make-up alone are expensive, unless you wanna use cheap products that comes from unreliable manufacturer to ruin your face/skin, and the wig, of course character wigs are expensive. You cannot make a good quality costume from poor quality materials.

      • Fated Blue said, on January 17, 2014 at 10:38 am

I have done my part of cosplaying but it wasn’t exactly, in the strictest sense, a serious costume. It was a little group cosplay we did as Patapon characters and the costumes only utilized carboards, some “rough” foil (of which the exact type eludes my memory), a few cut outs and paint plus black overalls wit some painted cardboard as weapons. Some of us had wigs for added effect.

It was around 2007 if I remember correctly. Toycon or Mangaholix. I had to go to Las Pinas so we can make our costumes together and I live, and still live, in Cainta, Rizal. I didn’t mind the distance because it was fun doing things with friends and it was cosplay. I felt so alive during these times and the drama was minimal or, rather, contained.

The costume I made ended up being 5 feet long and 5 feet wide. I had to carry it home so you can just imagine the stress of carrying home something so cumbersome. From my description, you can tell that our costumes didn’t cost us thousands of pesos. It did, however, cost most of us precious time due to travelling and some of us even lost sleep but we made it in the end. We never disappointed anyone. Most of all, we didn’t disappoint each other.

It was what you can say, as far as pricing is concerned, a cheap costume. The materials were poor in nature but because of creativity, and a little bit of patience, it looked awesome. I wish I can show you a picture but my hard drive got corrupted a few years back.

Now do you understand my point when I say I applaud cosplayers who invest their valuable time more than money? With money, you can earn it. With time, however, time is forever lost.

      • Lollyck said, on January 18, 2014 at 12:39 am

I think that applies to how difficult to construct the costume you want to wear. I think it depends on the character you wanna cosplay.

      • Fated Blue said, on January 18, 2014 at 7:52 pm

Not really. A good quality costume will always have cost as its second priority. The time you invest in it is always first. It can be the world’s cheapest costume and a skilled cosplayer/costume maker can make it look like money was spent on it. Not to mention if the cosplayer plays the role well.

      • Lollyck said, on January 21, 2014 at 4:01 pm

I agree but that doesn’t apply to all aspect of cosplaying a character. Say for example the wig, that wont cost you less.

You know, one person does not represent the whole community. The whole community represents the community.

There are a select few, as mentioned above, but that’s the problem; they’re few. I blogged this way back but I still stand by my opinions.
