Chicago police are seen on a a street on the city's West Side Monday morning Oct. 27, 2008, where authorities say they found the body of a young black boy in an SUV that reportedly has a license plate matching the number listed on an Amber Alert issued for Jennifer Hudson's missing nephew, 7-year-old Julian King. King hasn't been seen since Friday, Oct. 24 when Hudson's mother and brother were found shot to death in their home.

Police found the .45 caliber gun in a vacant lot about a block from where the body of Hudson’s nephew, Julian King, was discovered Monday morning, ABC News Chicago affiliate WLS-TV reported.

Forensic testing on the gun showed it to be the same weapon used to kill all three people, police said.

Police have not named a suspect in the killings, but Chicago Police Department Superintendent Jody Weis said that identifying the weapon used in the crimes was a positive step.

“We’ve still got a lot more to do,” said Supt. Jody Weis, Chicago Police Department. “There’s still a lot more forensic examination to do. Right now, we’re extraordinarily pleased and satisfied that the weapon has been identified as the weapon that has been used in the homicides. And there’s still more work to do which we are doing at this time.”

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms traced the gun to the original owner in Michigan, who had reported it stolen, WLS-TV reported.

“Recovering the weapon was a good sign. It gives us some additional clues. We’re going to keep running them down. Like I mentioned before, I am extremely confident that this case will be solved,” Weis said Thursday, the day after a police trainee found the gun.

Though he has not officially been called a suspect, William Balfour, the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson’s sister, is a person of interest in the case, police said.

Balfour, 27, has reportedly refused to take a polygraph test and has stopped cooperating with investigators. He is being held on a parole violation.

Julian King’s body was found Monday in the back seat of a white Chevrolet Suburban that police had been looking for since Oct. 24, when he went missing and Hudson’s mother and brother were found shot to death in their home on Chicago’s South Side.

The vehicle was found about 10 miles southeast of the Hudson family home, and police said that the boy had been shot multiple times.

“We’re just sad. We’re going through this stage where we’re just sad and in shock,” Hudson’s aunt, Dorothy Hudson, told The Associated Press Monday. She and her husband, John, own a Chicago funeral home that plans to handle arrangements for the family.

Chicago police recovered a body of a young black boy from an SUV on Monday morning. It is believed to be Julian King, the nephew of Oscar-winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson.

Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, was found dead on the living room floor by her other daughter, Julia Hudson. Officers later discovered Hudson’s brother, Jason Hudson, 29, in a bedroom.

Police say until they find evidence to the contrary, they believe one person is responsible for all the killings.

Records from the Illinois Department of Corrections show Balfour is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle.

According to their marriage license, Balfour and Julia Hudson were married on Nov. 14, 2006. Neighbors and his family members said the couple had been separated for about a year.

Balfour’s mother, Michelle Davis Balfour, said Donerson had ordered Balfour to move out of the family’s home last winter, according to local reports.

According to neighbor Bernice Russell, there was “a lot of tension” between the pair, and Russell overheard another neighbor say that Balfour had threatened to kidnap Julia’s son a couple weeks ago.

Russell said as far as she knew, Balfour was living with his girlfriend, with whom he is expecting a child. The Tribune reported that police had interviewed her and that her account contradicted Balfour’s alibi the day of the killings.

Russell’s husband Joe said he had been “very dismayed” by the slayings. “I’ve never seen this kind of violence before,” he said about his neighborhood of 17 years. “They were nice people.”

The tragic events come just before Jennifer Hudson was scheduled to embark on a world tour today to promote her self-titled debut album with its chart-topping single, “Spotlight.”

Hudson, whose star had been on the rise after she was ousted on Season 3 of “American Idol,” was featured in the summer blockbuster “Sex and the City” and stars in the film “The Secret Life of Bees.”

In 2007, she hit superstardom with her debut film role in “Dreamgirls,” earning a best supporting actress Academy Award for her role as rising singer turned down-and-out single mother Efie White — a role Hudson said she always wanted to play.

The singer also recently announced her engagement to David Otunga, best known for his stint on VH1’s reality show “I Love New York.”

Julian King was found dead in this SUV

Police have identified the body of a young boy discovered in an SUV in Chicago as Jennifer Hudson‘s missing nephew Julian King, police Supt. Jody Weis said Monday.

The body was discovered “in the rear seat” of a white Chevrolet Suburban on Chicago’s West Side Monday morning, according to the Chicago Police Department. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds, according to reports.

Immediately following the news of the body’s discovery, Hudson’s family members organized a church vigil. Several family members visited the medical examiner’s office Monday afternoon.

King, 7, went missing Friday after an unidentified assailant fatally shot Hudson’s mother Darnell and brother Jason. Over the weekend, Hudson offered $100,000for the safe return of her nephew.

When police issued an Amber Alert for Julian on Friday, they identified a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban with Illinois license plate X584859 as connected to the case.

The Chicago Police Department issued the following statement before noon Monday: “At approximately 7:06 A.M. a 1994 White Chevrolet Suburban bearing Illinois license plate X584859 and identified in the Amber Alert was located at 1313 S. Kolin. A body was discovered inside the Suburban, in the rear seat of the vehicle.”

The Chicago Tribune reports that bullet casings were found in the boy’s room on Friday.

Boy’s Stepfather Being Held

King’s stepfather, William Balfour, is being held on a parole violation after he stopped cooperating with police but has not been charged with a crime. He was taken into custody at a girlfriend’s home hours after the bodies of Hudson’s mother and brother were found.

Sources tell the Associated Press that the girlfriend contradicted his alibi. Police were able to track his whereabouts Friday through cell phone records, sources said.

Police Supt. Weis told reports he was “pretty optimistic” about finding the person responsible for the crimes. “[We’ve”] got two crime scenes. Oftentimes there’s lots of evidence left at a crimes scene so I’m very confident that our forensic technicians will go through both areas with a fine-toothed comb, and I suspect there will be some evidence that will link us to the killer.”

Asked about Balfour, Weis said, “We are following any lead that we can get right now. He’s a person of interest, but that’s not to say that there’s not other individuals that may turn up. Right now we are just following the facts we have and we are following the evidence we have.”

Police have not recovered a weapon connected to King’s death.

Also Monday, Fox Studios issued a statement regarding the tragic weekend. “Everyone at Fox Searchlight and Twentieth Century Fox wishes to extend our deepest condolences to Jennifer and her family. Our thoughts are with them in this time of profound sadness.”

Jennifer Hudson endured more heartbreak Monday when she identified the body of her 7-year-old nephew – found shot to death in an SUV – at the Chicago city morgue.

The Oscar-winning actress and singer, who grew up in the Windy City, journeyed to the coroner’s office, where the body of little Julian King lay on a gurney covered with a white sheet.

“Yes, that is him,” Hudson said quietly when she saw the boy’s face on a video screen, said Sean Howard, a spokesman for the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

For Hudson, whose mother and brother were found slain Friday, it brought the devastating death toll in her family to three.

Still, she did not buckle under the grief: “She was just brilliant and strong,” Howard said.

“Her last words to me were, ‘Just tell the general public once again to respect my family’s privacy.'”

Hudson said her faith in Jesus Christ “was going to get her through that,” Howard said. “Those were her words.”

As she left the facility, Hudson’s bodyguards held umbrellas to hide her anguish.

Nobody has been charged with the murders, but cops are holding William (Flex) Balfour, 27, the estranged husband of Hudson’s sister Julia, at a state prison for a parole violation.

“We’re following any lead we can get right now,” said city Police Superintendent Jody Weis.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Julian had been shot once in the head and was dressed in basketball shorts and a stained white T-shirt.

Julian vanished Friday from his home on the gritty South Side after Hudson’s mom, Darnell Donerson, 57, and brother Jason Hudson, 29, were gunned down.

Jennifer Hudson, 27, who won an Oscar for her role in “Dreamgirls,” and had remained tight with her family, immediately flew home and offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to Julian’s safe return.

The hope that he was still alive was dashed Monday morning when Julian was found on the floor of a Chevy Suburban truck that had belonged to his murdered uncle.

Balfour, Julian’s stepdad, has a long rap sheet: He has spent nearly seven years behind bars for attempted murder, vehicle hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Out on parole, he was shacked up with another woman in a violent, drug-infested neighborhood on the West Side of Chicago near where Julian was found.

“He’s like a cool little cat,” an upstairs neighbor of Balfour’s girlfriend said of the ex-con.

It was a dog walker who spotted the suspicious truck and called the cops, and it matched the one sought in an Amber Alert issued after Friday’s double murder.

As police searched weed-strewn vacant lots and alleys, neighbors said they noticed the truck Sunday.

“I’d seen it out there three or four times Monday,” one woman, who would not give her name, said. She could not explain why she didn’t call police.

UPDATE: Hudson Thanks Fans, Asks for Prayers

Posted in entertainment by Fated Blue on October 27, 2008

Jennifer Hudson has posted a message on her MySpace page, thanking fans and friends for their words of support and appealing for help to find her missing 7-year-old nephew, according to TMZ.

Julian King was reported missing Friday from the family’s home, where Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, 57 and brother, Jason Hudson, 29, died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Hudson reached out to her fans in an online message, accompanied by a picture of Julian King, who is believed to have been abducted at the time of the murder.

The message reads, “”Thank you all for your prayers and your calls. Please keep praying for our family and that we get Julian King back home safely. If anyone has any information about his whereabouts please contact the authorities immediately. Here is a picture of Julian and what he was last seen wearing. Once again thank you all for being there for us through this tough time.””

Yesterday, Julia Hudson, the 31-year-old sister of the actress made a public plea at a Chicago church for the return of her son, AP reports.

Hudson’s sister spoke from the podium at Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church alongside the boy’s father, Greg King, AP reports. She says her son “”doesn’t deserve this.””

The Oscar-winning actress’ brother-in-law William Balfour has been arrested over the double murder, and is currently being questioned by the police, but no charges have been filed.

He is being held by the Illinois Department of Corrections, however, due to breaking the terms of his parole. A source tells TMZ, the “”homicide investigation is still active and ongoing.””

Balfour’s mother told police that Darnell Donerson had thrown Balfour out of the house last winter. She denied that her son had anything to do with the slayings.

Hudson — who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her tremendous performance in Dreamgirls, and whose song “Spotlight” has hit the top of the R&B charts — credits her mother and family for keeping her grounded.

In a recent interview with AP, Hudson said: “”My faith in God and my family, they’re very realistic and very normal, they’re not into the whole limelight kind of thing, so when I go home to Chicago that’s just another place that’s home. I stand in line with everybody else, or, when I go home to my mom I’m just Jennifer, (so she says), ‘You get up and you take care of your own stuff.’ And I love that; I don’t like when people tell you everything you want to hear — I want to hear the truth, you know what I mean?””
